Navi’s Dota roster goes inactive

By Matt DixonJuly 23, 2021
Natus Vincere have announced that they will move their Dota 2 Squad to an ‘inactive’ status. After failing to qualify for The International 10, Navi’s line-up will not be making it to next season without some changes. The team had gradually revamped their roster, building a star-studded line-up over the past two seasons featuring three of the famed ex-Virtus Pro players: Volodymyr “Noone” Minenko, Roman “Ramzes666” Kushnarev, and Vladimir “Rodjer” Nikogosyan.
Despite the presence of three multi-major winners on their team, the results weren’t there. The team failed to qualify for The Animajor – their last chance to earn an invite to TI10. With the qualifiers being their final chance to make it to TI10, Navi made their final reshuffles – bringing on Noone and Akbar “Sonneiko” Butaev to replace longer-term members Bogdan "Iceberg" Vasilenko and Andrii "ALWAYSWANNAFLY" Bondarenko.
However, even the qualifiers proved to be above Navi, as they were knocked out early at a pitiful 5/6th place. Shortly after, Sonneiko announced his departure from the squad, raising questions as to whether the remaining four would stick around.
And finally, the inevitable announcement came that Navi would move their roster to being ‘inactive’. Navi posted a full video interview (with captions!) discussing the background of the situation and their attitude to maintaining a Dota 2 squad in the future.
Who exactly will be staying or going from Navi – if anyone – will likely only be known after TI when more players become free agents. What we do know however, is that buying good players can’t buy you success. Sometimes the best players in the world don’t play well together – who remembers Just-Error?
Holding onto the three ex-VP players seem like a gold mine from a marketing perspective, but the notoriously fiery attitudes of some players necessitate a strong captain to keep everyone in line. Who do you think will stay on the Navi roster? Who would be the best captain to bring the org back to it’s peak?
