Virtus.pro and Team Spirit secure Major spots

By Jack VioletMay 10, 2021
With an impressive 5-0 run from both Virtus.pro and Team Spirit, both teams have secured a top-three spot in the Eastern European DPC and a spot at the next Major.

Top two almost guaranteed

Virtus.pro and Team Spirit have yet to drop a series and both sit at a game score of 10-1. These teams have looked unstoppable and a level above the rest of the region. One more series win for either team will guarantee a top-two spot, meaning they will be able to avoid the deadly Wild Card and jump right into the Group Stage if they land second place or straight into the playoffs if they secure first place.
These teams are practically guaranteed top two. Aside from the series between VP and Spirit, each team has a series against a significantly weaker team. Spirit will play EXTREMUM in their last series who have yet to win a single series. After narrowly missing the last Major in a tiebreaker, Team Spirit will finally have their chance to acquire some much-needed DPC points.
VP will go up against Winstrike Team, who although have shown moments of brilliance, are facing the most established team in the region. In fact, Dmitry "DM" Dorokhin, VP’s offlaner, expressed after their last victory that they purposely drafted themselves a game with hard conditions in order to practice. It’s safe to say VP are feeling themselves this season.
Though it’ll be a battle for first place between VP and Spirit, this match will be happening at the beginning of Week 5 on May 13 rather than the last match of the season.

Who will secure the third Major slot?

With Virtus.pro and Team Spirit’s ticket to the Major secured, there is one spot left for the major in EEU. This slot will most likely go to Natus Vincere. Na’Vi struggled in the beginning of the season and were crushed by both Team Spirit and VP but have bounced back, sitting in third with a score of 3-2. Their last two series are against two teams who haven’t had impressive performances thus far: Team Unique and PuckChamp.
With only three spots available, it’s grown increasingly likely that AS Monaco Gambit, who qualified for the Major last season, will not qualify. They struggled heavily against the top teams in the region and were unable to defeat any of the top three discussed earlier. They’ll need to rely on Na’Vi dropping a series in hopes of forcing a tiebreaker.

Who will be relegated?

As with any league, the bottom two teams will be relegated to the Lower Division. EXTREMUM, who placed fifth last season, has yet to win a single series. They were dominant against the teams in the lower half of the standings last season, but have struggled heavily to accomplish anything this season. PuckChamp looks to be the other contender for relegation, as they sit in seventh with a score of 1-4. Having placed first place in last season’s Lower Division, there were certainly higher expectations for this team. They have some challenging series ahead of them and will need to pull some miracles to stay in the division.
