After a long hiatus, Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan is returning to competitive play as a stand-in for Team Liquid. Today, Liquid announced that offlaner Samuel "Boxi" Svahn will take a hiatus to spend time with his family.
Team Liquid finished in fourth place during the first season of the 2021 DPC and then fell at the Singapore Major in 9-12th place.
SumaiL's return has been speculated about for months. The talented mid player left Evil Geniuses at the end of the 2019 season after competing with the team for his entire career up to that point. He has struggled to find a roster ever since, spending time with an iteration of Quincy Crew, OG, and a CIS stack. While this is not a permanent solution, it will certainly give his fans a taste of what they've been missing.
This also will not solve the question of what SumaiL will do about competing at The International 10. It certainly seems that he's missed any opportunity to join a viable, valid roster ahead of the event.
Team Liquid, meanwhile, will need a strong showing in the second season of the DPC to qualify directly to TI10. At present, they are likely guaranteed a spot in the regional qualifier for the event. Still, no team, especially not one in the very stacked European region, wants to take that route.
SumaiL will debut with Team Liquid on April 27, when they play Brame at the start of the third week of the DPC.
