Only a few hours remain before the One Esports Singapore Major begins its final day of Dota 2 action! urs remain before the One Esports Singapore Major begins its final day of Dota 2 action! The last few days have been jam-packed with great games featuring teams from across the globe. After 16 series over 3 days of playoff competition, we are left with three teams fighting for the spot of tournament champion. Only Evil Geniuses, PSG.LGD, and Invictus Gaming remain, all of these teams with drastically different stories of how they got here.
Evil Geniuses continue to look like the most dominant team in the world. After a string of online tournament wins many believed that Team Secret was the top dog in the DPC. However, it seems they were amazing relative to the Europe region; a region which has faltered in this tournament specifically.
Instead, Evil Geniuses have risen to the top of the heap with their dominance in One Esports Singapore Major. They have not dropped a single series in a clean Upper Bracket run to the Grand Finals, with PSG.LGD being the only team to even take a single game off of them. The efforts of PSG.LGD in the final game of the series in the Upper Bracket final were not enough to beat the current tournament favorites — Evil Geniuses.
There is a clear boundary between the top three in terms of their journeys getting to this point. Both Evil Geniuses and Invictus Gaming were both seeded straight into the tournament for winning their respective regions. PSG.LGD is the only wild card team left and they have now made it into the top three. They have had to play 32 games in the past week to get to this point.
With OB.Neon and Thunder Predator going out of the tournament yesterday, PSG.LGD is really the only Cinderella story left in the Major. After losing to Evil Geniuses in the Upper Bracket finals, their only obstacle to a Grand Finals appearance is a best-of-three against arguably the best Chinese team in the world, Invictus Gaming.
Invictus Gaming shares a similar path to Evil Geniuses: they won their region and were seeded directly into the playoffs. The difference between them and Evil Geniuses is that IG have had to play more games and have taken more losses. Invictus Gaming dropped a game to both Vici Gaming and Thunder Predator on their path back to the Lower Bracket final matchup against PSG.LGD. Perhaps the most telling part of Invictus Gaming’s journey is their 2-0 loss to Evil Geniuses, a series that had Evil Geniuses in control of most of the game.
