Vikin.gg parts ways with offlaner Tobi after DPC relegation

By Matt DixonFebruary 25, 2021
Vikin.gg has announced that they are parting way with their offlaner, Tobias “Tobi” Buchner, after spending over a year as the same roster.
With Tobi, the team climbed from obscurity to a dominant force over Europe’s tier two scene, bringing home respectable titles such as the European divisions of the BTS Pro Series 3 championship and The Summit 13. Vikin.gg eventually become a serious competitor amongst Europe’s tier one teams in 2020 during the season of online leagues, capable of taking down the likes of Team Secret and OG. While they were unable to win any tier one tournaments, the team ended 2020 with a strong following who truly believed Vikin.gg would remain a top competitor within the EU region and a likely participant at the first Major of the season.
Unfortunately, the first DPC season for Vikin.gg did not go their way. While they did qualify for the Upper Division, they were unable to perform strongly in the regional league and finished with a 2-5 record despite impressive wins over OG and Nigma. Their performance saw them relegated to the lower division of the DPC for season two, meaning we won’t be seeing Vikin.gg make it to either of the Majors this year, meaning the team will have to succeed in the regional qualifiers to make it to The International this year.
For the latter half of the DPC regional league, Vikin.gg played with Maurice "KheZu" Gutmann standing in for Tobi. Vikin.gg have yet to confirm who will replace Tobi, however, given that Khezu is still a free agent and has been standing in for the team, it seems he would be the most likely candidate. Khezu is known from his time with Team Secret several years ago, though he has struggled to find a successful team since leaving Secret. Even so, Khezu is a well-respected player within the scene and likely to be a strong and stable addition to Vikin.gg. The team will have to fight their way back up to the upper division next season, but this should be no problem if the team can return to their top form.
It’s been a rough season for Vikin.gg but hopefully a roster shuffle is the shake up they need to realise their full potential. You can currently catch Vikin.gg competing in the Snow Sweet Snow #2 tournament where they will meet some of their future lower division competition!
