The third round of the ESL One Group stage is complete. Remember, this tournament uses a modified Swiss-style system where every team must achieve three victories to go through to the playoffs, but if they lose three series, they’re out!
So far we have two teams with a perfect 3-0 record: Team Secret and Alliance have already earned their place in the playoffs, while Tempo Esports and Extremum are out already with 0-3 records. The group stage is getting tense now; the remaining teams are either one win away from earning their playoff spot, or one loss away from going home… or just getting knocked out, they’re all playing from home anyway.
Nigma still struggling
After round one, we were surprised to see Nigma lost 0:2 to Yellow Submarine. Round three saw another blow for Nigma as they fell 0:2 to Mudgolems, a team most would expect Nigma to win against. With elimination looming, Nigma need to win their next two series to go through to the playoffs.
3-0 Victors: Straight to the playoffs!
2-1 Competitors: One Win Away!
1-2 Strugglers: last chance!
0-3 Goners: Better luck next time
Which series are you looking forward to from round four? For us, OG versus Yellow Submarine is the one to watch. Yellow Submarine are a serious underdog at ESL One Germany but they’ve already made a splash by taking down Nigma and Ninjas in Pyjamas. Sure, they lost to Team Secret, but who doesn’t? If they can take down the two-time TI champs in round four of the group stage, they’re going through to the playoffs!
